1.What's the NSZ
Collection?
The late Mr. Sizumu NOMURA was a great
amateur entomologist who greatly contributed to the
faunistic study on Coleoptera of Japan, Taiwan and their
adjacent regions, namely Scarabaeoidea, Dryopoidea and
Tenebrionoidea. After his death, his collection was placed
in the National Science Museum, Tokyo, and it is preserved
and curated there, now. The NSZ collection is containing
thoutsands of Coleopteran specimens mainly from Japan and
Taiwan including abdout 400 holotype specimens. These
holotype specimens are outstandingly important for the
systematic study on Asian Coleoptera.
The entomological staff of NSMT rearranged the NSZ
collection including holotypes which deposited to NSMT by
Mr. Sizumu NOMURA while alive, and built a visual database
for the purpose of systematic study on Asian Coleoptera. For
the database, these invaluable type specimens are available
for systematic study for Coleopterologist all over the world
without any risk of damage.

2.Taxonomical Notes on the NSZ Collection
1)Note on the type
designation
This database includes holotypes and one
representative of the syntypes in principle, but an allotype
and a paratype are also contained. The asterisked types in
the part of "TYPE DESIGNATION" as "Holotype*", "Holotype**",
"Holotype***" and "Syntype**" each means the followings:
Some holotype specimens preserved in the NSZ Coll. are not
labelled "Holotype" , but red-labbeled "Type". There are
some paratypes red-labelled "Paratype" in the same series.
The types named "Type" therefore, should be the holotypes
designated by the original description. Then, these types
judged as the holotypes are shown "Holotype*" in this
collection.
Holotype specimens of some Melolontha species described by
Nomura, 1952 are not designated by the original description.
However, they are designated with the type labels maybe
written by the author. These specimens should be recognized
as the holotypes according to the article 73a of ICZN. Then,
these holotypes are indicated as "Holotype**" in this
database. On some species shown as "Holotype***", the
author has not designated the holotype in the original
paper, but the holotype is determinable by monotypic
designation.
2) Note on the type
labels
The holotypes each accompanied with collecting, type and
the other kind of labels. The collecting labels are upper
surface, type labells are below them, and blue paper might
put previously to indicate booking for registration. The
type label is a large red paper on which the species name is
written by Mr. NOMURA (left picture shown below) or Dr.
Yoshihiko KUROSAWA who was a curator of NSMT and received
and deposited the holotype. These labels each recorded in a
picture in our database, which are arranged from left upper
side for upper layer on original pin to right below for
under layer.

3)Note on the
registration cards
Registration cards of NSZ collection was made by Mr.
Hirokazu KOBAYASHI when the collection moved to NSMT. The
text data of this visual databese is based on the
registration cards. The original cards are preserved in
NSMT.
